What is SEO?

You are here probably because you’re new to the SEO industry, and so I thought I should start from the very beginning. So, what is SEO? At PagelinkSEO.com, we keep things simple and try as much to avoid confusing jargon. So Search Engine Optimization (SEO) basically entails all the activities and efforts of improving the visibility of your website to Google and other search engines.

In many cases, it involves optimizing your site for certain words and phrases relevant to your subject matter/niche. Search engine optimization can be narrowed down to two basic areas:

• On-page optimization:
On-page search engine optimization basically deals with website elements that directly affect the architecture and contents of the website. These may include website page coding, inbound links and structure/map, textual content and multimedia content.

• Off-page optimization:
mainly refers to backlinks-these are links that point to the site that is being optimized, from other related websites and platforms.

SEO, therefore, targets getting “free” and “natural” traffic from search engine listings. Major search engines, i.e. Google, Yahoo, and Bing offer listed search results such as text content, videos or images based on what they consider relevant to the readers.

How SEO works

You might think of a search engine as a website you visit to type in whatever query you have search as Google, Yahoo! or Bing and get some replies after a few seconds that will hopefully answer your question. Well, that true. But have you ever taken time to think about the magic behind the links that you receive as replies from these search engines?

To put it plainly, search engines such as Google have crawlers that goe out to collect all the relevant information they can find on the internet. The crawlers then feed this information back to the search to build a search index. That index is then fed through an algorithm that tries to match all the supplied data to your search query. The search engine algorithm considers a lot of factors while ranking various pages. And if you stay here long enough, you will be learning all of them.
